Comment from the artist

This works presents us with the mirror versions of the same character: the stony shape representing 'matter', the material side of us, and the winged being, the 'spiritual'. The human face placed in the centre of the painting represents the intelligence that allows us to discern what we wish for, while the sea offers the transparency of the light that allows us to see what really is. As for the sky, or open space, it is the set for our eternal confrontation with this duality, during our whole life.

The inspiration for this work came during a journey in the South of Italy (Taranto, Puglia) where, from the window of my hotel room, I could contemplate this sea and this sky, which I afterward wished to recompose on canvas.
